Background

Eight spent most of his life with a devoted owner who cared for him deeply. For the past five years, they lived quietly and remotely in the woods of Oregon with little socialization outside their bond. Recently, his owner became critically ill and passed away, and Eight never had the chance to say goodbye. Since then, he has remained on the property, waiting and watching for the person who was his entire world.

A close friend of the owner, who promised on his deathbed to help Eight, has been visiting him daily. Although he is fearful, he has not shown aggression. He has a dug-out den where he retreats when startled, but he is also showing increasing curiosity and openness.

He has taken food gently from her hand, follows her movements, and recently initiated playful interactions — important signs of trust for an animal with his history.

Eight is sensitive, observant, and deeply affected by the loss of his person. His behaviors reflect both the wolfdog tendency toward caution and the desire to bond:

• Fearful but not aggressive

• Begins trusting steady, calm individuals

• Has lived peacefully with other wolfdogs in the past

• Retreats to his safe space when unsure

He is not suitable for beginners and requires someone experienced with wolfdogs or feral-leaning northern breeds.

Eight needs an environment tailored to his emotional and physical needs:

• Located within Oregon or surrounding states for feasible transport

• Experienced wolfdog home 

• Secure, dig-proof, high-level containment

• A calm, low-traffic property

• A patient caretaker with a slow, gentle approach to trust-building

• Optional: A stable, confident canine companion

• No urban or suburban settings

Because he currently lives close to his caretaker’s home in the woods, placement must ensure that he cannot attempt to return to his original territory. A secure enclosure is essential.
