Background
Apollo has been with his current family since he was a puppy and has lived primarily as an indoor companion. He is house-trained, crate-trained, rides well in the car, walks nicely on leash, and has completed a 30-day board-and-train program. He enjoys spending time outdoors in his kennel/condo, loves music, watching TV, and especially enjoys walks, hikes, and runs. He is highly intelligent, affectionate with those he trusts, and has done well in a boarding environment where he has played appropriately with other dogs.
As Apollo has matured, however, he has developed increasingly concerning resource guarding behaviors and territorial tendencies within the home. His family is expecting a baby and no longer feels they can safely manage these behaviors, making this an urgent placement.
Personality
Apollo is a smart, loyal dog who forms strong bonds with his people. He enjoys relaxing during the mornings, loves outdoor adventures, and has a playful side that includes “singing” and howling along with music.
He has significant resource guarding behaviors involving food, high-value items, and even vomit. He should always be fed separately and carefully managed around anything he may perceive as valuable. He has also shown territorial behavior toward unfamiliar visitors entering the home and requires thoughtful introductions and experienced handling.
Apollo has no known bite history but has displayed behaviors that require proactive management and an adopter who understands canine behavior.
Ideal Home
Apollo is looking for an experienced, confident owner who understands resource guarding and is committed to providing structure, consistency, and appropriate management.
His ideal home would include:
- An adult-only household or older, dog-savvy teenagers
- No young children
- A home comfortable managing resource guarding behaviors
- Slow, thoughtful introductions to new people
- An active lifestyle with regular physical exercise and mental enrichment
- A family willing to continue training and provide clear boundaries
While Apollo has successfully lived with other dogs and an indoor cat under careful management, his resource guarding and territorial behaviors mean any resident pets should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
